It All Started With A Hamburger…
By the late 1800s, a rise in cattle ranching made it possible for more Americans to enjoy beef almost daily, and ground chuck burgers were the most affordable option for many. Cheese, however, wasn’t considered as a topping. While there are competing claims as to who invented the first cheeseburger, Lionel Sternberger is generally considered to be the originator. In 1926, at 16 years old, he dropped a slice of creamy American cheese on top of a sizzling burger at his father’s Pasadena, California sandwich shop, and history was made. Just a couple years later, the cheeseburger was appearing on menus at other West Coast restaurants, and by the 1930s it had thoroughly taken off on a national scale. And because you can never have too much of a good thing, it didn’t take long before the cheeseburger was doubled. In the 1950s, McDonalds ran double cheeseburgers as promotional items, though it would be another decade or two before they appeared regularly on the chain’s menu boards across the country.
